The Breaks

Actually, its doesn't hurt too much just typing, and I wanted to tell you about this movie we saw last night. With nearly every TV programme ending, we decided to join up with another local video shop, and got out 3 films to watch. The first one was 'The Breaks', a comedy about an Irish white boy Derrick, living in LA who acts like he's black (he was adopted by an African American family). His mother gives him an ultimatum, bring home a carton of milk by the end of the day otherwise he's kicked out of the house. It is very reminiscent of some other cult films, the sex torture scene is straight out of 'Pulp Fiction', the ho's are very John Walters-esq!

Vanilla Porridge

Last night was our first Saturday night with no NTRM for 2 years. We spent our time watching a film that Joe had videod while I was in Brisbane, called 'Vanilla Sky'. It was good, but with a strange ending, didn't totally understand it. If anyone else has seen it and has an explanation please let us know.

This morning, tried a new breakfast, cold porridge (after seeing a newspaper article on the health benefits of porridge, and Joe has it every day anyway). It was surprisingly nice, and refreshing in this hot weather. You just soak the oats in milk overnight, its traditional in Germany

Do you ever think about nerds?

I don’t often, but I’ve noticed an increasing number of folk around me at work that like to refer to themselves as nerds.

I was researching some Bayesian filtering techniques to minimise Spam (an issue I am currently spending my days working on for my client) when I came across an essay writhen by Paul Graham on the subject of 'Why Nerds are unpopular'. It makesa good read, especially for me who was probably someplace in the middle ground at school, neither the top dog nor ever categorised as a nerd (my dyslexia was usefull for something then ). Have a read, I think we can all identify with bits of it in one way or another.

House update

Finding a builder might not be so easy…. David (the architect) contacted his list of seven builders to offer the plans to them for them to quote a price on. Seems only 2 of them are interested, the rest are either already too busy or don’t want to take on such a big job. Hmm….. not a good sign. Back to looking for builders!!!

This is freaky....

I just voted for East 17, Utah Saints and Kate Bush on the 'Closet Classic' countdown too - without knowing what Joe had voted for. We must be so well matched :) ahhh

Trudi is keeping tight-lipped(insert crude comment here) about who she favours. Anyone else voted?

Oh, by the way, I just got back from a work trip to Brisbane. Didn't think much of the city - lovely beach where they plonk the airport, the city is way inland with lots of 60s tower blocks. And the people seemed to be a bit 'Jerry Springer'...... I've never seen so many pony-tails and cowboy boots. Kept expecting to hear 'YEE-HA'. I thought its meant to be Bris-Vegas, not Bris-Texas?

[dino]

Melbourne has a high percentage of Cyndy Lauper fans ??????

Hmm are there really that many Cyndy Lauper fans in Melbourne that also listen to JOY and complete the voting form?

Some how I think not…

I just put my votes in for the Closet Classic countdown on Joy . Once you have voted you get a chance to see the current results. I was amazed to see so many Cyndy Lauper songs in the top ten. I feel a real Cyndy fan might well be voting lots and lots of times for her. Made my choice of Utah Saints, East 17 and Kate Bush seem trivial :))

Christmass day on Joy .. and sound.

Just heard that we are doing Christmas day on Joy in the 10am to 1pm slot, so start telling us what you want now.

And!

I’ve just added a form of streaming sound to the JOY website. No you wont be able to listen to live broadcasts on the Internet yet (though there are ways to do it) but you will be able to listen to past shows should they chose to upload them to me.

At the moment the sound is only on the home page (promo for the Closet Classic Countdown – next to the link for the voting) and on the rainbow reports page from today (Thursday)

Do you think there is much mileage to be had making interviews etc available to be reheard or even whole shows? Let me know here and I can pass on the comments to those in charge. I’m already planning that we record the Christmas day show so that PM can catch it later as she’s out of state I think.

I forgot to blog this bit too.

Its official :)

Chocolate is good for a cough … I’ll have to stash away my 70% cocoa stuff right away.

AND –

The best voice on Australian Idol won – good on ya… Casey.

You all know that the Australian Idol I fell in love with was Chanel – but alas she didn’t make it through, so I had to pin my hopes on a great singer instead. Already bought my copy of the basically bland song that she somehow manages to put such feeling into and make sound much better than it really is.

[Joe – again]

Wassup?

Blog has been thin on the ground this week. I’ve had a cold and been working hard and Dino has been out of state working hard.
So me sick, working and missing Dino is not a good combination!!

Good news is though that I just called the architect and the plans are going off to 7 builders today for estimates. The deadline for costs being 20th December. Finally it feels like something other than drawings might happen.

We got an estimate back from a Hydronic Underfloor Heating specialist, he had messed up and assumed radiators in the bedrooms – and had come back with a huge price tag. I contacted him to get him to requote for what we wanted rather than the radiators and the new quote came back considerably ($2000 or so ) cheaper!!! Had a company round last night to give us a quote too, just one quote isn’t sensible.

Getting the JOY program grid and show details ready for the switchover on Friday night and I’ve also just added a link on the joy homepage so that you can all do your voting for this years Closet Classic.

Did anyone catch the switchover from our show to Scot’s on Saturday night? Once again the transition to the other studio resulted in the dreaded ‘Dead Air’ until I noticed and told Scot that he wasn’t broadcasting beyond the studio.. a mild panic later by him and he once again located the button he needed to press… hopefully he will get the hang of it over the summer season.

Me again

Hello, its Trudi the Mute. I'm over at the boys house at the moment, Aunty Mary won't let me use her computer since accidently formatting her hard disk. Anyway, we're choosing songs for tonights show, all our own choices as its the last one of the season. Last night we went to see 'Bridgit Jones the Second' and today we had mushroom omelette for lunch. Even got to take my beautiful girlfriend Velveteen who plays the guitar and has large breasts

House update - the visit to the architect.

Did it rain?

Well we did the visit to the architect last nigh and it didn’t rain! – a curse has now been broken – No significant changes to the plans, just subtle details added and changed, like the direction the pantry door opens and how we could fit fly screen to the door on the rear terrace. Why is that a problem you ask, well its one of the few conventional opening doors in the house, the majority are more sliding walls than doors. Being a conventional opening door and one that must open outwards unfortunately, we can’t think of a way to fit a fly screen to it . Any ideas would be appreciated.

The draft of the building tender is now in our hands and I’ve been though striking out Hardie products all though it - no Hardie products going in out house if I can help it – same goes for halogen light and the wastfull transformers – out! The architect has put a deadline of the 20th December for responses to the tender. Seems builders go to the beach and BBQ after that until February – so hopefully its not too tight a timescale and we do get some responses. If you can recommend a builder – let us know, we want to go to six if possible, at the moment we have three.

In Slab Heating!

We got the quote back from the Hydronic slab heating folk too, seems they decided to quote for radiators in the bedrooms, not something we want. So a new quote is on its way! Finding Hydronic underfloor heating fitters is a bit like looking for Rowie’s hen’s teeth – there doesn’t seem to be many folk doing it, and we don’t want the electric loop type as its not very ‘green’

Lunch time thoughts on a sunny day

Ahh what a fine day it is in this fair city of ours. This feeling is despite my current location being in a bunker like building in Toorak that has little windows at the top of 4 meter high walls, so the only view I have outside from this desk I am using, is the sky! Still I worked up a good sweat this morning with my run, the sun is shining and I’ve just had a huge butty (sandwich to all you non northern English speaking folk) for my lunch. So as you see it only takes sweat, sun and food to make me happy!

So what’s new?
I’ve just confirmed with the architect that our meeting is on for tomorrow (Wednesday) so you can expect a change in the weather in the next 24 hours. Based on previous experience, whenever we need to visit the architect at his office, the weather manages to turn ‘most foul’ and even ‘naughty’ as any self respecting Jane Austin novel might say. Usually high winds, heavy rain and really cold, not much fun two up on Dino’s motorbike! Seems David wants us to talk about builders again, the structural engineer still not having finished his bit of the drawings.

By the way, the architect we keep mentioning is David Luck, we can’t mention him on the show, but this is our blog, so we can here. If you are looking for a great architect that also happens to be a friendly easygoing sort of guy, look him up (Maybe we will get a discount now….). His arty, wordy website is http://users.bigpond.com/david.luck/page_1.htm which is well worth a brows, though you'll have to forgive him for using a fuzzy text effect – using .jpg for text images instead of .gif (ups! There goes the discount!)

Last weekend Dino and I dropped in on a house for sale in our neighbourhood, just off the foreshore, its one that’s similar to ours but up for sale with plans already approved for an extension. It seems that it took them over two years to get the plans approved, so now we realise that we possibly set some sort of record for our area by getting ours approved in just three months. Even though that was quick, its now been over 6 months since we bought the place and first met David.

Anyroadup, you have been warned, prepare for rain on Wednesday!

Wonder how Rowie’s chooks are doing? Are they early fatteners for Christmas or are they (as I hope) just an extension of the clan that will return the affection, food and care given by the Rowie family, by producing daily free-range eggs for breakfast. Must admit I have a problem with eating an egg that is still warm from a hen’s fanny. I’m happier if some time can be had to let me forget the real source of the ovoid food. Preferably neatly packaged in a recyclable box labelled with a sketch of a rural scene of peace and a happy free ranging hen. But then that’s just me and my strange ways.

Dino starts work on a sting for Playlist Pete

Its 4:10 p.m. just a few hours before the show, and Dino has decided to get us to record a sting for Play List Pete, who is joining us in the studio tonight. Pete has been a regular listener for ages, not sure why we haven't had a sting for him before, most of the regulars have them and even demand that we play them on occasions.
Think we might have to add a few sound bytes to the blog so that the likes of Rowie, Feral Teen, Steve, Tex and MP (Mystery Programmer) can play their own stings whilst the show is resting.

Is everything ending

Sex & The City is ending. Burke's Back Yard is finishing. Australian Idol is concluding. Not The Real McCoy is ..... well, just having a break. But what are we all going to do over the Summer???

Sunday, November 07, 2004

Hello from Trudi

Hello, this is Trudi (the quiet one). The boys have let me have a go. See, I do exist! and I CAN type, Joe. Why else would they give me my typing diploma?

(Because
I paid for it - Dino)

The show Sat. 6th Nov. 04

Well only two more shows to go before the break for summer. We enjoyed doing last nights show, all feeling that it was a bit manic. I guess we're too used to having the help from either Baby-doll (Andrew) or Luscious Ken, what a great benefit they've both been, the Programme Support often don't get enough notice for the work they do.

(Yea ok Joe, we all know you used to do programme support for NTRM and some daytime shows - Dino)

Last night we had the controversy over who exactly sent in the first listener playlist- was it Mystery Programmer or was it Playlist Pete? We've a feeling Dino remembers, but he's not saying, he was enjoying the banter between the two!

Guess next Saturday, Playlist Pete will have the airwaves to himself to lobby that he was the first - especially as Mystery Programmer has already told us she won't be listening next week. Suspect that we'll still get the odd SMS from her though, she's such a dedicated listener that she's been know to listen to the show from her mobile phone at a Christmas party!, SMSing us from the top of a mountain, completely out of reach of the broadcast and from far flung countries such as Singapore.

We had an interesting / odd call last night, a call to ask us discuss the sexual orientation of some actor or other , Joe took the call and it didn't help that he'd never heard of the actor, but this caller was insistent that Joe pose the question on air - ...is such and such gay or not.... Now Joe is, as we all know, a bit long in one or two of his teeth, so there was no way such a question was going to be asked on air by any of the NTRM crew. Joe said as much on air and moments later we received another phone call which Dino took this time - complementing us on the handling of the question. ... We suspect that we were being tested

Do some folk have nothing better to do that to try to set up situations so that they could then complain?

(Ooo think we just had our first Sex In The City moment of the blog).

At last a Not The Real McCoy Blog

Cos its the thing to do, and Trudi tells us a basic web site is ‘so five minutes ago’, we’ve decided to start a blog to keep you all up to date an fully clued on our lives whilst we take a summer rest from the Not The Real McCoy show on Joy Melbourne.

Things like what’s happening with the house, has the pervert returned to the nature reserve, how are Aunty Mary, Velveteen, and Cousin Ed and what’s the latest on Tony the Greek. You just know you will be gagging for the news!

Come back soon y’all – y’hear
