picnic on listener fodder

picnic on listener fodder

One of the perks of doing a show on JOY is that extra-special listeners give us gifts of food (or lucky welcome cats and chocolates). Saturday we had yet another fodder bag left for us, so here we are tucking in at the end of a long bike ride on a cold winter Sunday in Melbourne - Thanks to all at Rowieville for the tucker.

House progress week 7

week 7

At last, the steel for the interior of the old house has finally arrived. Steven the builder tells us that 'things should progress a lot quicker once the steel arrives' so lets hope we have something more substantial to show next week.
I'd enjoy watching them lift and position the bigger beams, will they have a crane I wonder. The big beams look heavy.

coconut yoghurt

Is there anywhere in Australia where you can buy coconut-flavoured yoghurt? We miss it. We used to get it in Gran Canaria. Kind of semi-set yoghurt, they called it 'french-style'.
So we've been making our own recently, by adding dedicated coconut powder into greek natural yoghurt. Yumm.

Gretel

Aww, bless Gretel. It was fun watching Big Brother Uncut last night, if only to see how uncomfortable and embarressed the now-wigless Gretel looked every time she had to introduce the next bit of footage. Funny how they had chick-on-chick action, threesomes (albeit pretend ones with lots of laughing) with a guy and 2 girls, but no men with other men. Wonder why??

Men & Cakes

What is it with cakes in Melbourne coffee shops? They always look really good, but taste like I imagine plastic display food would taste. The supermarket ones are even worse, tasting of some sort of oil emulsion. All look, but a bit disappointing when you take a bite. A bit like the men in Commercial Road? (oo, we cant say that can we...)

Where do you go for good cakes (apart from the excellent home baked ones we often get to sample) - and dont say Acland Street. Joe just wants his Crème Patissier to taste like Crème Patissier and not cornstarch-thickened yellow stuff. A bit like his men.

Pre-show update - house reno week 5

Another week of nothing to report on the house - the builder must still be waiting for the steel beams, or spending our money on a holiday on the gold coast. :( Hopefully something will be added to the house soon, rather than just removing bits.

Flinders Street Flyover makes way for the Eifel Tower

I only found out today that the Flinders Street flyover that goes over King Street is being removed. It will cost between $10-15million. Admittedly its a bit of an eyesore, and will make access to the river easier. That is, untl they put another huge block of apartments in there, to be named The Eifel Tower! Just what we need in Melbourne, more apartment blocks in the city, and more traffic on Flinders Street. All tram routes on Flinders Street are affected too.

well what can I say

Nothing much to report this week.... the architect warned us that we wont be seeing much progress on the house this week as they are manufacturing steel beams offsite. Tony-the-greek says the builders are "good boys" (which probably means they will listen to all of his stories).

What else is there? Big Brother 5 started this week. Large-breasted women and arrogant men seems to be favoured this year. And Gretel's wigs always make here head look too squared-off, like a cube.

Chook

Did anyone catch the media-shy Jamie Oliver on tv this week, demonstrating how chicken nuggets are made. Bits of chooks beaks, eyeballs and turds (or something). Yukkaro! And to think I used to like them. Although since watching the movie Super Size Me, I won't even go near a Maccas.

Now I'm having free-range chicken breasts. I had found in the past that if I grilled a chicken breast, it never cooked properly in the middle, or went dry on the outside - so just took the easy option and went for junk food. Last week Joe showed me that if you slice the chicken breast open into two flaps, its like an schnitzel..... and ya know I never knew that. I always thought those heart-shaped schnizels were pre-formed or something. You learn something new every day

Kate Bush

I found an old cd last night with a Kate Bush soundalikey singing Kate Bush songs in a Kate Bush style. Hmm, should I play some on Saturday night, or is it too slow....

disturbing saturday night

Is it a culture thing? We spent 2 years living in a large block of apartments in South Melbourne, and were never disturbed at 3am by the fire-alarms being set off as the culmination of an extremely noisy party. But 2 weeks into living in a smaller block of apartments in Port Melbourne, and we have a sleepless night.
The demographic here is DINKY (dual-income, no-kids-yet) 30-somethings, the other place was 20-something mainly-foreign students. Are students quieter and more responsible than professionals?

At least we can now stop wondering what the speakers are for, built into the ceiling of the bedrooms. The fire-alarm sirens were almost deafening. The fire-brigade were around before we got out onto the street, but then announced "some drongo set off the alarm on the 4th floor, everyone can go back to bed now". And they didn't even offer to tuck us back in....
